PENPAL:
Albert Gomez, AKA
PenPal, a husband, a father, an MC first found his
love for Hip Hop as a young break-dancer/popper back in the early 80’s. In 1987
he turned his affection to the turntables and soon mastered the art of mixing,
cutting and scratching. He continued to DJ backyard house parties in his native
PicoRivera/Whittier home in
Southern
California.
Throughout his teen years and early
adulthood he was involved in the
Los
Angeles party seen and
aside from Djing in clubs he would serve as a DJ for
secular rappers on the come-up. In 1995 after coming home from a gig, was
assaulted at gun point and was jacked for his vehicle and DJ equipment. This
seemed to be the end of his DJ occupation.
In 1997 Albert gave his life
to Christ and God restored his passion for the turntables when his church
embarked on a youth ministry called The Oneighty in
Norwalk
California. It just so
happened they were in need of a DJ and who better. He then connected with some
rappers within the ministry and they formed a group called Konsist of Evidence. This is when he was inspired to pick up
a pen and pad and started writing Rhymes. PenPal and
Konsist Crew would minister and perform at juvenile
detention camps, local Hip Hop spots as well as The
One-80, which would attract as many as 500 to 700
youth on a Saturday night.
He relocated to
Las
Vegas and with no crew to
collab with was challenged to perform solo. Through
the experience he was motivated to hone his skill at open mic spots. Through the network of MC’s he met Kid Sundance
of The Boombox Titans which
in turn introduced PenPal to Kwon 5966 of the former
Elekt Poetz, The Psalmist 2
and LIB. This Mesh of solo MC’s took hold of a vision to Unite as they share a
common goal to be used by Christ and to share their God inspired gift to reach
as many as possible, be it the means of Hip Hop.
So we have the re-birth
of Elekt Poetz….
